LOVE IS A FOUR-LETTER WORLD
Poems by Maurice Rutherford

_________________________________________________________________________________

Maurice Rutherford was born and educated in Hull and spent a working life, with the interruption of some five years’ wartime military service, as a technical writer in the ship-repairing industry on both banks of the Humber. His first two volumes were well received:

Slipping the Tugs (Lincolnshire & Humberside Arts, 1982):

’Rutherford has performed the unusual and praiseworthy feat of creating intelligent, subtle and moving poems which are also accessible.’ Ian McMillan, Iron

This Day Dawning (Peterloo Poets, 1989):

’Rutherford’s is a totally original voice, sure, wide-ranging, very moving and arresting, as well as often being very funny.’ Charles Causley

Love Is a Four-Letter World, Maurice Rutherford’s third volume of poetry, contains witty and deeply moving poems about childhood memories, education, wartime service, and retirement. Hull and its poets, including Larkin, are major presences, as is appropriate to a volume which uses as epigraph for one of its poems a quotation from Czeslaw Milosz:

’The purpose of poetry is to remind us
how difficult it is to remain just one person,
for our house is open, there are no keys to the door,
and invisible guests come in and out at will.’

One of the concluding poems in this volume addresses the matter of pit closures and high level unemployment in the metre of Larkin’s ‘The Whitsun Weddings’.

A Silence

What I remember remembering
of nights he came home drunk to her
is not the thump of a falling chair
or the shock of shattering glass,
not the strop of strident voice on voice
that rattled the sash in its frame,

but the way a silence held the house
between each charge and countercharge -
the ache as I lay and raised my head
off the pillow till the neck-muscles gave -
and relief when their drubbing began again;
and how morning came and he’d gone.
