Gerard Benson, a member of the poetry performance group The Barrow Poets, is also one of the trio who founded and run Poems on the Underground. He is the author of several poetry books both for children and adults, including Bradford and Beyond (Flambard Press, 1997) and To Catch an Elephant (Smith-Doorstop, 2002), and is the editor of two ground-breaking Puffin anthologies: This Poem Doesn’t Rhyme, which won the Signal Poetry Award in 1991, and Does W Trouble You? During his twenties he was a professional actor, and later taught for twenty years at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He has done much radio and TV work, particularly with poetry, and recently appeared on the BBC’s popular Poetry Please. During 1994 he was Arts Council Poet-in-Residence for the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere, and he has had British Council residencies in Berlin, Paris, Oslo and Cairo.
U.A. Fanthorpe has published eight individual collections with Peterloo, starting with Side Effects (1978). Her most recent collection is Queueing for The Sun (2003). Her Collected Poems 1978-2003 will be published by Peterloo in Spring 2005. One of England’s best, most popular and prolific poets, U.A. Fanthorpe is renowned for her entertaining and moving readings. She was awarded the CBE for services to literature in 2001. In 2003 she was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. She appeared recently on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.
Peter Scupham has published nine collections of poetry with Oxford University Press plus Night Watch (Anvil, 1999). His Collected Poems was published in 2002 by Carcanet Press in their Oxford Poets series. With John Mole, he founded the Mandeville Press which for some twenty years published in letterpress small editions of contemporary poetry, often with accompanying graphics. He has broadcast, reviewed, and taught writing-courses for the Arvon Foundation in Devon and Yorkshire, and is a Cholmondely Award winner and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
Harry Chambers, the publisher of the Peterloo Poets imprint, reads all the poems entered and supplies the other judges with a shortlist of 100 poems.

Open Section: £5 sterling for each poem entered to a maximum of 10 entries. Visa/Mastercard also accepted: supply card no. & expiry date plus your signature and print your name. (Foreign cheques/currency will not be accepted).
15-19 Age Group Section: £2 sterling for each poem entered to a maximum of 10 entries.
RULES OF ENTRY:

Entries must arrive on or before Tuesday 1st March 2005. Results will be available on Friday 20th May 2005. Entry form available from Peterloo Poets (address above) or click link.

All competitors must tick or highlight the relevant age group box. No competitor may submit more than 10 entries. Payment must cover all entries submitted. (see above).

3.
|
Poems may be on any subject or theme and in any style or form but must not have been previously published. All poems must be typewritten in the English language, be the unaided work of the competitor, and must not exceed 40 lines. MANUSCRIPTS CANNOT BE RETURNED.

4.

The entry form should be completed with the competitor's name, address, telephone number and the number of poems entered. The titles of the poems must be listed. The competitor's name must not appear on the typescript.

5.
|
Copyright remains with the author, but authors of prizewinning poems must agree to assign first publication rights to Peterloo Poets for inclusion in the Peterloo Competition booklet (July 2005, £3.95 post free: cheques payable to Peterloo Poets).

Receipt of entries will be acknowledged ONLY if entries are accompanied by a stamped self- addressed postcard marked "Receipt". Individuals will be notified of the results ONLY if entries are accompanied by a stamped, self -addressed envelope marked "Results".

7.

The organisers reserve the right to change the panel of judges without notice, and to withhold payment of any or all prizes if the judges decide that such withholding is justified. The decision of the judges will be final and the organisers will not enter into any correspondence thereon.

8.
|
Entries not complying with the rules of the competition will be disqualified, and the submission of any entry will be deemed to imply the unqualified acceptance of the rules of entry by the competitor.
